What has Coventry got to offer?
You’ve secured your student accommodation, that’s it, you’re moving! One of the hardest things about moving to University is not knowing your new surrounding area in your new city! Below is just a brief overview of what prospective Coventry University and University of Warwick students can expect when moving to Coventry.
Learning the best transport links is definitely one of the first things to do when moving to a new place! Coventry has a main train station, a 10 minute walk from the city centre and a 15 minute walk from Coventry University. The University of Warwick is a 10 minute car drive away from the train station, with buses every 20 minutes. Coventry also has an abundance of taxi firms operating in the City, with fares varying between companies.
Home to Coventry City Football Club and Wasps RFC, the Ricoh Arena can host up to 32,609, with the overall capacity rising to 40,000 for concerts. The arena also has the Ericsson Exhibition Hall, a Hotel, Casino, Club Store and the Arena Shopping Park located nearby.
Coventry also has a Coventry Sports & Leisure Centre, offering facilities to rent on a ‘pay and play’ basis and a regular bookings system for a variety of sports. The Centre also offers an Olympic Swimming Pool, Golf Course and a Gym.
As well as the Sports and Leisure Centre, Coventry is home to a variety of gyms with various gym packages for contract terms. Both Coventry University and the University of Warwick offer gym facilities, with the latter that are opening a new Sports & Wellness Hub in April 2019. The centre will boast state-of-the-art sporting facilities for its students! The City Centre also hosts multiple quality gyms such as JD Gyms and a PureGym.
The Coventry nightlife hosts a variety of nightclubs such as JJ’s, The Kasbah and Carters. Ranking in the top two for the best nightlife in Coventry with CoventryTelegraph’s poll is Scholars and The Empire. Both offer different music genres and events, with both being in the heart of the City! The Warwick SU also has The Copper Rooms located on campus with student nights every Wednesday and Friday. Each nightclub during the week, and on weekends, host themed events that differ each time!.
Along with the Arena Shopping Park, Coventry also has large shopping centres such as West Orchards and Lower Precinct in the city centre. IKEA is also located centrally for those last minute essentials that you’ve forgotten! The ‘Big Name’ brands are located centrally, with Fargo Village offering a vintage selection, a creative hub that offers a little bit of everything. It’s worth a visit!
Fargo Village is home to Shopping, Food, Drinks and Events in fun social spaces in a more relaxed atmosphere. REDKANGAROO Trampoline Park is located on the outskirts of the city, easily accessed buy car or bus. Other leisure activities such as Planet Ice Coventry, and the famous Music, Transport and Herbert Art Gallery Museums located more centrally. The City Centre also has a Laser Quest and Odeon Cinema located next to IKEA.
Every University student needs time to relax and enjoy the nice weather, when it eventually comes around. Coventry is home to many large parks that offer peaceful tranquility to unwind during term time. The larger Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve is located South-East of Coventry, with more centrally located parks such as War Memorial Park and Coombe Abbey Country Park offering greenery.
Future Development of Coventry
The current £361 million regeneration of the City Centre is under way, with an estimated completion time of 2022, just in time for your masters! The development project is set to be opened in stages, so during your time at University, you will have new facilities in the City Centre opening all the time.
